Contrary to popular opinion, the martial art Karate was not invented in China. Rather, it has its origins in the island of Okinawa in Japan. The word "Karate" means the "empty hand" or the "Chinese hand", and it has been given this name because it involves a rapid use of hands and legs in an extreme close combat.
The skill level system in Karate is based on karate belts and their colours. These belts play a significant role for determining the expertise of the skilled men and women. The most advanced karatekas are ranked by their dan. Here is a typical ranking system, in ascending order:
Karate offers many health benefits, it tones and shapes the body, increases aerobic stamina, improves muscular strength and flexibility, enhances balance, agility and co-ordination and quickens the reflexes. Karate also improves our mental health, constantly challenging the brain, it improves focus and concentration. It also develops a person’s composure and provides a deeper insight into one’s mental capabilities.
One of the advantages of karate is that students may train at their own pace so even those who have not exercised in some time can start learning and gaining from the benefits of karate.
